Date squares

Cream butter (or margarine) and sugar together until light and fluffy. Combine flour, salt and soda; add to creamed mixture. Stir in oats, blending well. Pat half of the mixture into a lightly buttered 13x9x2-inch baking pan; spread with date filling then top with remaining crust mixture. Lightly pat so as to smooth the top crust. Bake at 180° for 30 minutes. Cut into bars while still warm; remove from pan. Makes 32 date squares or bars.

 

3/4 cup butter or margarine
1 cup light brown sugar
1 3/4 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon soda
1 1/2 cups quick-cooking oats, uncooked Date Filling
2 ½ cups chopped dates ; 1/4 cup sugar ; 1 1/2 cups water
